Edna has had fantasies of love, but she has been disappointed in some way when it comes to her marriage with Leonce. She only married him because her family expected her to, not because she chose to. Although she knew that this was a practical decision, she had a rebellious streak when it came to her marriage. She knows she must walk this path, idly, aimlessly, unthinking, and unguided. Chapter 10: Question 3- How does Edna respond to swimming successfully for the first time? What happens that can be considered symbolism or foreshadowing?   The entire summer Edna attempted swimming but was never successful. She had several instructors, but no success. When the doctor proposes the idea of a possible genetic defect, Leonce reassures him the he checked Ednas family lineage before he married her. Both men are patronizing and seeing women as strange creatures who are moody and whimsical. Neither man appears to understand Edna and what she is going through. Chapter 30: Question 3- Describe the setting for the dinner, the table, the furnishings, and the overall atmosphere. What does this tell the reader about Ednas decision to leave? The table is covered in yellow satin lace cloth, with large candles burning softly under yellow silk shades. There was something extremely gorgeous about that evening, luxurious dining chairs replaced the usual stiff ones, the gleam of gold everywhere. Essay about Wuthering Heights and Romantic Ascent - 491 Words

Martha Nussbaum describes the romantic ascent of various characters in Wuthering Heights through a philosophical Christian view. She begins by describing Catherine as a lost soul searching for heaven, while in reality she longs for the love of Heathcliff. Nussbaum continues by comparing Heathcliff as the opposition of the ascent from which the Linton’s hold sacred within their Christian beliefs. Nussbaum makes use of the notion that the Christian belief in Wuthering Heights is both degenerate and way to exclude social classes. To begin Catherine attempts to find heaven as way to soothe her emotion, but discovers her heart belongs to something else. That something else is Heathcliff, who also finds life on earth a tortuous and difficult†¦show more content†¦However the paradox continues because their love cannot ascend to its ultimate form, as each will refuse their love by the social desires of the time. Nussbaum also establishes a conflict between the fundamental Christian world of the Lintons, and the chaotic world of Heathcliff. The distinction is clearly drawn as a virtuous and companionate world in which the Linton’s live, while Heathcliff is drawn to immoral and devious actions. The author does not however see it this simple. The superficial piteous world is in fact shadowed by a shallow a fake ideal of life. Even Catherine realizes the forged environment in which the Linton’s live, as she explains, â€Å"in whichever place the soul lives. In my soul and in my heart, I’m convinced I’m wrong.† Even though Heathcliff is portrayed as a demonic figure, he also is shown as the romantic Christina lover. This love is the driving force behind his urge to fight against what is expected of him. Both the Linton’s and Heathcliff are not given the satisfaction of becoming the portrait for the ideal Christian. The novel also goes on to comment on Christianity as both imperfect and dubious school of thought. In the first instance the most pious characters including the Lintons, Ellen Dean, and Joseph all behave in direct contradiction of their belief. They act selfishly and look no further than for their own superficial world. Bronte at least gives Heathcliff a justified method

Sound of Night Maxine Kumin free essay sample

Maxine Kumin recalls an experience outside with other people at night time when a whole other world comes out. She describes the many animals that thrive in the night and make noises that can be interpreted as threatening. The author appears scared of the unknown and what could be lurking in it’s dark depths. The title, â€Å"The Sound Of Night†, makes the reader begin to ponder what sounds they associate with night. I associate night with chirps and whistles and creaks and rain drops. Many people may think of night as silent and serene while actually a lot happens during the night. As in the poem, animals such as birds, frogs, bats, fish, and others continue their lives impervious to the setting sun or come out to begin their days in nocturnal happiness. Kumin uses her title to relate to her theme of fearing the unknown that can be hiding where you can’t see. Again, the dark is personified when Kumin says â€Å"we defend ourselves from dark. † Now that dark needs defending against, the night is even more foreboding and unwelcome to Kumin and her fellow adventurers. Kumin’s poem explores the night that we don’t know. She enlightens us to the kind of animals thrive after the sun goes down, the different noises sounding through the seemingly quiet blanket of dark, and feelings of fear and wariness. In her poem, Kumin reveals about humanity that we all fear the unknown and whatever we think could be lurking where we can’t see.
